At level 4 you will complete 2 core courses in computing and workplace skills, followed by a database or web design elective depending on your preferred area of interest. The level 4 programme consolidates learning in these administrative and technical topics ensuring a high level of competence.

Create and use a simple computer flatfile database to solve a problem
Produce a computer flatfile database to provide solutions for organisation use

Web Design Elective:

Discuss the social implications of information technology
Create a web homepage using a template
Create a simple website to meet the specifications of a given brief

Advanced Word/Publishing Elective:
Apply language and text processing skills to produce specialist documents
Produce a simple desktop published document (Publisher)

Additional Information and Programme Requirements:

Software:

Office Professional 2003 or Office Professional 2007 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher.
  • Desktop Publishing electives require you to have MS Publisher software. This is included in MS Office Professional Version 2003 and 2007, otherwise you may need to purchase it separately
  • You will require Microsoft Project for the core courses.
  • For the Web elective you will require FrontPage or Dreamweaver.

Hardware:

A computer capable of running Windows XP or Vista, and Office XP Professional/Office Professional 2003/Office Professional 2007. (Including a monitor, mouse, CD-RW drive and modem)

Other:

A printer plus A4 paper and printer cartridges/ink.
A telephone (mobile or landline).
A broadband internet connection and e-mail is essential for students who have chosen web electives at Level 4

Prerequisites:

Some electives require you to have specific knowledge before you study them. Where indicated, you must either have completed the unit or have experience that enables you to successfully complete the elective. You can ask your tutor about this.

Co requisites:

Some electives require you to study another, similar elective in order to maximise your learning of a specific topic. Where this is indicated you will need to choose both electives from the options given.

When you select electives to meet the prerequisite or co requisite requirements the credits must still meet the specified programme total.
